After being a chairperson at Sheriff Hall I decided that I wanted to take on more responsibility. Previously working as a member of the executive council I was able to get some good insights into the different presidential positions.
Taking on the role of floor president in a new building was difficult as there are no traditions to guide you. I was responsible for creating a frosh week schedule, creating elements for future house traditions and creating something the house could rally around from scratch. With my council we were able to do just that!
It was an amazing experience and a very busy year for me. I was entering my third year at the university and had also added a part time job for some extra income at the same time.
With my council we created a frosh week schedule that was filled with fun activities. We even created things that would show them the city. "City trips" were scheduled for such destinations as Wal-mart, a walking tour of Downtown, How to get to Bayer's Lake via Bus and other destinations that students, who were new to Halifax, might want to know about. We even had a laundry 101 class. We also partook in the usual food fight, entered and WON the residence song competition and got our shine on for Shinerama to raise funds for CF.
During the year we created house clothing, organized a ski trip out to Wentworth and also held a toga and other themed parties. At the end of the year our floor had become everything that I had hoped it would. The fifth floor was recognized as the only floor of the new building to have not received any damage for the entire year! (This is a very big deal in the residence community)
With all this behind me it was time to take my chance with moving off campus to see what my forth year would hold.
Why a Blog-umé?
I wanted to create something new, something non-traditional that would showcase my life's professional and personal achievements. I wanted to show more of my personality and character, more than a simple sheet of white all purpose printer paper and some bullet points can.

I came to the conclusion that a Blog-umé would be a great forum to showcase my experiences from the past and give me the ability to keep everyone updated as things develop. Unlike the traditional resumé and cover letter, which can become outdated within a single day, this Blog-umé can be accessed by any potential employer at anytime to find out about my recent activities, projects, volunteering, or employment.

Residence Council: Sheriff Hall 03/04 Chairperson
Residence was a great experience. I was able meet and get to know a huge number of wonderful people and make some amazing friends. There are a ton of resources available for first year students who move into a residence on campus. After my first year in residence I wanted to help the next year find their feet so that they could enjoy university life just as much as I did. I wanted to be part of a great council that would be there to help new students adjust!
So at the end of my first year I applied to be on the executive council as the Hall Chairperson and started my second year as a proud council member!
As the chair I was responsible for the proceeding of all the council meetings (creating the agenda, scheduling, resource management) as well as be an active floor leader and frosh leader for the year.
In my aim to help the first year students find a comfortable groove, I set up study groups for classes like physics and calculus and created a group study schedule for the floor lounge. Since I was a psych major I decided to head up a mid-term study session for those having trouble in their first year psych class.
But as we all know university isn't all books and studying it is also parties, sports and making friends.
As an active council member I had the opportunity to help with the organization of the Think Pink Charity Ball helping to raise funds for the fight against breast cancer. I was also a chaperon for many events throughout the year. During the aftermath of Hurricane Juan I volunteered in the cafeteria and also helped to orchestrate taxis to the airport after the White Juan snowstorm and then went out to build one very large snowman with some of the students who were left.
All of this fun left me hungry for more and I decided to stay yet another year in residence and became the first President of the 5th Floor in Risley Hall.

Sheridan College Advertising Management, Class of 2008
Next stop on the education train: Sheridan College in Oakville ON.
A very exciting and comprehensive program; I was quickly knee deep in strategy and homework.
The classes covered market research, account planning, law and ethics, sales and more. We explored the individual elements of a project and all the small and not so small steps that are needed to complete it. Including the client briefing, creative brief, the contact report, big idea and the pitch.
Not only did we learn about the individual elements that are part of a job/campaign but we put that knowledge to work to create a communications plan and pitch presentation for two campaigns.
I worked on HungryMan with James Clark and Gaylea's Spreadable Butter with Tim Sarrazin and Crissy MacDonald.

The 4 W's
I had made my connection with advertising but I really didn't know a whole lot about it; what happens in an agency or what kind of positions there are.
It was time to find out.
I sought out a very helpful and experienced account director by the name of Geoff Wills. (he had been a guest speaker in my creative process class) He agreed to meet with me to answer some of my questions about the industry.
In the course of about an hour I was told an epic tale of the creative team, the big idea, the client, the studio and the account side. Leaving that office my spark of interest had been fanned into an inferno of industry passion!
So my Who and What were now answered but there were still two W's to go: Where and When.
I took the next few months to put together some funds and plan my next steps. In scouring the Internet for programs that would lead me to advertising I found the step I had been looking for. Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario had an advertising program!
My application was sent in, I was accepted and before I knew it I was packing.

Dalhousie University BSc Psychology, Class of 2006
At 19 I packed my suitcase and headed off to Halifax NS to attend Dalhousie University, the university I had been dreaming about attending since I was in middle school.
A dentist wanna-be at the time I soon found myself falling in love with the human mind and declared my major in psychology.
I focused in on the behavioural side of life (since actions speak louder than words) and I took courses on such topics as personality, social cognition, abnormal behaviour, forensics and others. Outside of my major I found myself taking such courses as Modern American Culture, Youth Cuture in Canada 1950-1970 and The Creative Process.
From this unusual mix of courses and interests I found myself making links between our cultural consumption, consumerism and how we think, feel and make choices in our everyday lives It was from this connection I decided to continue my studies with a focus on advertising.
